WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … Think John Donne. Think “Go and catch a falling star/Get with child a mandrake root/Tell me where all past years are/Or who cleft the devil’s foot/Teach me to hear mermaids singing/Or to keep off envy’s stinging/And find/What wind/Serves to advance an honest mind” and you see the structure of this poem. Velocitas effugium is my best attempt at Latin for “escape velocity,” which is the speed needed for one object to be able to escape the gravitational pull of another (not that I want to escape you, ladies, how boring would the world be then?). The image is an homage to Hans Sebold Beham’s Adam & Eve (Germany, 1543). Oh, and yeah, the title is set in gorgeous Lombardic Capitals.
