WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … Out here the stars in winter are bright. Orion is in the south when I go to bed and in the west in the darkness when as an old man I stare out the window at 4:00 a.m. On those cold nights I often worry if the animals are warm. And so the first stanza. And at least the first line of last stanza. The rest comes from wherever the rest comes from. And the title came after the poem was written. It’s an old Anglo-Saxon made of “uht” or dawn, and “ceare” or care. So “Uhtceare”is “dawn care,” literally. But the meaning, as told by Mark Forsyth of The Guardian, is the “anxiety experienced just before dawn. It describes that moment when you wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep, no matter how tired you are, because you’re worried about the day to come.” The title text font, Lomabardic, comes from initial letters found in printed books from the Incunabula period of printing, the second half of the fifteen century. The paper is from Nepal. The stars are known as “printer’s flowers.”
