WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … Sir Walter Scott, in his Border Ballads (1803), published the most common version of the Scottish ballad, “The Twa Corbies” (Two Ravens). This less polished version, published by Alexander Cunningham in 1826, has a more authentic feel, i.e. unedited by one of the great poets of the age. This is my homage to a broadside ballad—17th century song lyrics, usually with a hastily made illustration, printed on one side of a single sheet of paper. The score was not included, as they were often set to tunes people already knew, hence the mention of that tune was all that was needed (as I do in mine, “sung to the tune of The Swan”). The mixture of Roman & Gothic type was common for broadsides. Street addresses as we know them were still in the future, so a printer needed to publish a geographical direction, So to find my shop, travel east, pass the French River and in the green trees along the shore you will see a sign with two ravens. Look no further.
