You can never be lonely in Duluth Township, because there is always a chickadee nearby, even in the coldest winter. And the “hey, sweetie” song he sings for his mate isn’t just a love song, it’s the announcement that darkness and cold are to become memory. Winter is ending. This print is the first in my series A Field Guide to the Birds of Duluth Township, a lost book (a book of which no copies exist, and its existence is only known through mentions in other books) which I hope one day a kind reviewer will describe as a work “devoid of fact, but long on truth.” Tuque is the Canadian term for a stocking cap, which seem appropriate to this little guy, who is almost as dapper as that other Township dandy, Mr. Tod, in his pork-pie hat, corduroy coat, and moleskin vest. The type is Italian Old Style, another revival type based on the work of Nicolas Jenson in the 15th century. It retains a memory of scribal shorthand, the ligature, or joined letter. You can see it in the words such frost and beast which have an “st” in their spelling.
