WHAT I LIKE ABOUT HIS PRINT … This is what you get from having a Greek myth phase in your thirties. Aphrodite owned a woven golden girl that made any who saw her fall in love with her beauty. She was married to the lame Smith God Hephaestus, but carried on an affair with Ares, the handsome God of War. Jealous, Hephaestus forged a golden net and hung it over his bed and trapped the two lovers. Aphrodite’s girdle in still seen in the sky (Homer’ dark night sea) as the Milky Way. Nets are cast. The Fates (aka Necessity) spin out the thread of man’s life on the day he was born, and cut the thread on the day of his death. They are older than the Gods, and even the Gods cannot escape them. The spiral border, one of humankind’s oldest designs, is printed in red, and the negative space hand-colored with pearlescent white ink. It glimmers like a sprinkle of stars in the right light. They type is Centaur, a beautiful early 20th century type designed by Bruce Rodgers.
ps. For you fans of Netflix’s Kaos, Necessity is another name for Fate.
