WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … Uffa. What do I say? The paper is laid Gutenberg, and if you were to hold it up to the light you can see the chain lines from the mold, which are characteristic of early hand-made paper. The type is a facsimile (exact copy) from Aldus Manutius’ Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, published in Venice in 1495, and known as the most famous book no one has ever read. Wm. Morris, the impresario of the Arts & Crafts movement, considered it the most beautiful book ever printed. Its publication is seen as the moment the monochromatic printed book freed itself from the medieval manuscript. The border was recreated by me from Hadrianus Juniuis’ Emblemata, published by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1565. I shared the text with an English Professor once and was quite pleased when he later confessed he had done a Google search since he assumed I could not have written it. Honestly, folks, who hasn’t wanted to say out loud “three times I’d swear I never loved/before the golden cock crows thrice”?
