WHAT I LIKE ABOU THIS PRINT … Playing cards are part of the history of printing, dating back to the early 14th century. And the suites (or pips) weren’t always the four we know—hearts, diamonds, clubs, & spades. If oak leaves could be a suite five hundred years ago, then, I thought, why can’t foxgloves be a suite today? And who else would be better to be a face card of foxgloves than the Russet Prince of the Greenwood, Mr. Tod? And if you didn’t know, the fox is my namesake, as “tod” is the Scottish word for fox. For a deep dive into trivia, instead of holding a dagger, this Jack holds a bill hook, in the style of the Norfolk countryside. From the days of Jacques Bonhomme to Wat Tyler’s revolt, the billhook was the weapon of the people when they rose up against the injustice. Of course, now it is mainly the tool of the few remaining English hedge layers. But like Enoch’s hammer wielded by followers of Captain Ludd, it is still remembered.
