WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … This page from Entertaining Fables for the Instruction of Children, published in1790, introduced me to the sometimes quirky world of early books. Aesop can be a mirror of the century he is printed in, but does the moral seems appropriate for young children?  The typeface is delightful, having been cut in 1893 by the American Type Foundry as a knock-off (think Gucci handbags) of Wm. Morris’s Golden Type. The paper is “faux aged.” I boiled down some Duluth Coffee Company Peru Cajamarca, brushed the paper, pressed it, and then when it dried, spritzed it with a toothbrush rubbed in raw umber watercolor to get the look of “foxing,” the mold spots found in old books.
