WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT. I’m lucky to live on the migration route for birds, and have identified almost 60 species stopping by my three quarters of an acre. But I have a special place in my heart for the year rounds birds that keep me company through the long winter. The big flocks of Jays are always a delight. The bird guides like to point out the fun fact that Blue Jays are blue, but actually brown –
“The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering
light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs” – CornellLab: All About Birds
I admire science for giving us the wonder of that understanding, but I think the wonder of the Blue Jay is the blue. Then one morning when a Jay gifted me a feather under my feeder the idea of the print was born. Any maybe also I needed a reason to use my Dale & Rowney Galactic Blue metallic ink. And my pearlescent ink on the feather’s tip. And a little watered-down Payne’s Grey for the dark shadow in the lower barbs of the feather.
Thank you Jay, for your feather, and the wonder you bring to my life.
