WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT …  All the great heroes of myth need to slay a monster, Perseus slays Medusa. Setanta slays a monstrous dog to earn the name the Hound of Culann. Sigurd slays Fafnir the dragon and bathing in the blood understands the speech of all creatures. But, hey, who in Minnesota hasn’t slain the great white winter demon, even if only armed with a shovel? The type for this print is Cloister Old Style, cut in 1912. It is described as the closest revival to the original Roman type Nicolas Jenson used in his 1470 book, Preparation for the Gospel, which freed the printed book from the blackletter/Gothic types that mimic calligraphy. Just like some still have a land line & a cell phone, books did not change from manuscripts to printed overnight. Both technologies overlapped for years, so the hand-colored initial would not be out of the ordinary in a 15th or 16th century printed work. The lower, pine cone border is an example of the type-friendly decorative metal borders printers quickly adapted.
