WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … Guinefort, the 13th century canine who was unjustly slain by his master after saving the life of his child, was venerated as a folk saint by the people of France. Those of you who are Orthodox Guinefortists were expecting a greyhound, not an Australian Shepherd, but if you read Schmitt’s book The Holy Greyhound: Guinefort, Healer of Children since the 13th Century, you know that by the 19th century his master was no longer a knight, but either a woodcutter or a farmer, and Aussies are descended from the working dogs of Basque country on the border between Spain and France, just five hundred miles from Guinefort’s woods. This print, done on beautiful Nepalese lokat paper, features a metallic gold halo for our furry saint.
