WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … a little shout out to the loyal dog of Cullen the Sword Smith who had to die for the Irish hero Cú Chulainn to earn his name, “the Hound of Cullen.” Also, a bit of a shout out to George Bain and his book Celtic Art: The Method of Construction that I discovered in the early 80s. Having no knowledge of Celtic art, it was a bit mind-blowing for a boy from a small Minnesota town. The key border is of Pictish/Scottish origin that Bain drew from standing stones. The interlaced dogs come from the Book of Kells. The type is called Colm Cille (aka Columba), named after a 6th century Irish saint, and is based on the calligraphic script used in early medieval Irish manuscripts. The only place I know of that has the matrices left to cast this type is the Offizin Parnassiahe in Switzerland. The joy of letterpress is that this print called for  just this type, but in the year since it has not been used. Maybe one day a new print will call out for it.
