WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRINT … A classic “if I knew then what I know now, I don’t know if I would have done it.” The border (with the exception of the floral corners) is from Sebastian Brandt’s Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools) printed in 1497. There is speculation it may have been drawn by Albrecht Durer, of “The Four Horsemen” fame. The bees are an example of diaper pattern (“from French diapre’ meaning variegated”)* which is a common type of background found in medieval manuscripts. The queen indicated by proximity to a crown is from early printed English bee-keeping manuals. Lokta paper or Nepali kagaj, has been made in Nepal for almost 2000 thousand years from the daphne shrub, aka the lokta bush, for scriptures and official documents. This print is hand-carved, hand-inked, and hand-rubbed. And that is probably why they invented printing presses.
